Never before has so much state of the art technology been condensed into a pilots helmet. The HMDS (Head Mounted Display System) projects live infrared sensor information, target systems and other flight data straight onto the pilots eyes. These pilots now have senses and vision augmented far beyond those of a normal human.

The effect, for any viewer, is instantly apparent. The glowing green eyes conflict with our normal understanding of what a normal human eyes look like. It’s hard to tell where the technology ends and the man begins. Further blurring the lines between man and technology.

Strange then, how at the height of technological advancement, we can see so many influences from nature. It would not surprise to see that technologies like radar and antenna have been taken directly from the natural world.

Compare the butterfly for example, its compound eyes are able to pick up ultra violet light which helps it pick out flowers in a way in which the our visible spectrum cannot. This ultimately aids the butterfly in finding its target, helping it to survive. Comparable then to the fighter pilot, whose new found senses help give them the edge they need to survive.
